Learning is Child's Play with the Academy Network
Corporate Training Programme launched to support Cork business growth
Cork, August 22nd 2008: The Academy Network, the national networking division of the Irish Academy, launched today a proactive and stimulating programme of training courses for Cork businesses. Answering the need for businesses to become more competitive, in turbulent times, these training programmes aim to provide participants the skills to write business plans, network successfully, communicate key messages and write press releases. It is the first time that the Academy has offered its corporate training courses outside of Dublin.
In an increasing competitive market it is important for business owners to acknowledge that training is not a cost, it is an investment. It is less expensive to let employees spend a certain amount of time learning new skills than it is to train a new person to replace an employee. To invest in training means to invest in the future of the business.
Speaking on the importance of training to businesses Ellen Gunning, Director Irish Academy, stated "Skills can be described as a global currency for a globalising world. If a company has significant skill capital it will help the business to be innovative, remain competitive and enable sustainable growth. It will improve its productivity and competitiveness. Certainly in the environment we are working in today such skills would be a welcome investment for any business owner. Research among our members has indicated that this training programme is a very welcomed initiative".
The first course to be held in Cork, in September, deals with how to write a business plan - vital for any business and for its financiers. In October Networking Queen Tricia Murphy, TiG Alliance, will host a highly interactive workshop on teaching networking skills - how to go to a business meeting and leave with three good business leads. In November the Academy is hosting a conference called ‘Mission Impossible' which will focus on impossibly difficult messages and how to communicate them and, finally, in December course participants will learn how to write press releases and generate publicity for their business or charity. The Academy trainers are all practitioners who bring the benefit of hands-on experience to the courses. The courses will run over full or half-days.
The Cork branch of the Network was launched in May and a local committee has been formed to drive forward membership and participants for training courses. The committee is chaired by David Moran (DMOS Ltd) and the members include Laura Curtin (COMMUNiCATE PR), Gwenda Hughes (McCarthy's Bar and Bistro) and Billy McGill (photographer). The Academy Network is open to anyone working in the communications industry as a communicator (PR, marketing, event management or advertising) or as a supplier (hotel, photographer, printer, graphic designer, webmaster etc.). Details of all courses are on the academy website www.irishacademy.com/network.html and members can attend at a preferential, reduced rate.
