Irish Association of Suicidology benefits greatly from County Mayor’s Ball
Prestigious Fundraising Ball raises thousands for national charity
Cork, 24th June 2008: The County Hall was a hive of activity last Saturday when it played host to the first Mayor of the County of Cork’s Fundraising Ball, “A Night on the Red Carpet: Glamour and Glitz comes to Cork”, in aid of the Irish Association of Suicidology. Over 270 glamorous guests turned out to support this extremely worthy cause and raised a substantial amount of money. The night proved to be very important in raising awareness in Cork around the great work conducted by the Irish Association of Suicidology.
The Who’s Who of Cork Society joined Cllr Tom Sheahan on the night. Enjoying the hospitality were Bishop John Buckley, Dr. John and Betty Connolly, Dan Neville TD and President of the Irish Association of Suicidology, Colm Burke MEP, Simon Coveney TD, President of CIT Dr. Brendan Murphy with his wife Rosaleen and Professor Michael Berndt of UCC. The support of those attending will enable the national charity to invest more in research, resources and building awareness.
The Irish Association of Suicidology was founded in 1996 by Dr. John Connolly, the late Dr. Michael Kelleher and Mr. Dan Neville T.D in response to concerns about the rising suicide rates in Ireland and the grief and suffering caused to families and communities by these unnecessary deaths. The Irish Association of Suicidology is dedicated to disseminating information about suicide and suicide prevention so that public opinion can respond to the issue in an informed manner and assure that it is not ignored by the statutory authorities dealing with health, education and the environment.
A first for the Mayor of the County of Cork, this event certainly provided a night of great entertainment. The night began with a champagne reception, with pre dinner entertainment by the wonderful Swing Kings. Guests had the chance to catch up with old friends and learn more about the important work the Irish Association of Suicidology conducts. Packie O’ Callaghan, with his sharp wit, ensured all were entertained with his satirical take on our new Government officials and then Deuces Wild kept all guests on their feet with hits down through the decades. For the very energetic the DJ Liam played tunes into the early hours of the morning.
Speeches focused on the importance of dispelling myths around suicide. Recognising the challenges faced on a daily basis by this association and the growth in suicide in the Cork region Cllr Tom Sheahan stated “Unfortunately there are a lot of myths circulating about suicide and these need to be dispelled. The Irish Association of Suicidology does tremendous work in promoting awareness of the problems of suicide and suicidal behaviour in the general public, ensuring the public are better informed about suicide prevention and supporting the formation of groups to help those bereaved by suicide. I have no doubt that everyone here tonight can relate to the effects of suicide and acknowledge the need for more research into this area. It is important that there is more public discussion on this topic to enable people to be more educated. Events like tonight help shine the spotlight more on what needs to be achieved”.
Thanking the Mayor of the County of Cork for hosting the fundraising ball Dan Neville TD, President of the Irish Association of Suicidology, said “I would like to thank the Mayor and you all here for supporting our association. Funding is vital to our continued efforts in helping individuals and families across Ireland. Without support we would not be able to continuously invest in research and resources”.
A bumper raffle was held on the night and the kind generosity of the people and companies of Cork who donated was acknowledged by the Mayor. Cllr. Tom Sheahan, Mayor of the County of Cork, enthused as the event drew to a close “The evening was a success beyond my wildest dreams. To raise a substantial amount of money in one night is extremely encouraging. We would whole heartedly like to thank all of those who supported the event either by coming along, sponsoring prizes or making donations. Tonight is truly a celebration of the support in Cork for the Irish Association of Suicidology.”
