Local SuperValu Retail Manager does Ballincollig Proud

Quish’s SuperValu Ballincollig triumphant at Grocery Retail Awards in Management

Ovens, Co. Cork, July 14th 2008: Ballincollig is currently celebrating the success of a local retail manager in the recent Grocery Retail Awards in Management (GRAMs).  Quish’s SuperValu, Ballincollig’s leading fresh food retailer, announced today that its store manager Niall Shanaghy won a GRAM Award in the Symbol Group Manager (stores over 6,000 sq. ft.) category.  This is a great honour for Niall Shanaghy, the Quish’s SuperValu team and the Ballincollig community.

The GRAMs, now in their third year are the first and only national management awards scheme devoted exclusively to recognising the best managers in the Irish retail, wholesale and off-licence sectors.  Sponsored by Storefit, KerryFresh and Walkers the GRAMs were presented recently at a celebratory lunch held in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin.    In organising the awards ShelfLife, in conjunction with Excel Recruitment, set down a clear list of objectives. These were:

  • To acknowledge and reward excellence in Irish grocery and drink retail management, to include symbol, multiple, independent, forecourt and off-licence sectors;
  • To upgrade the standard of customer service and to increase the service competitiveness of Ireland’s retail industry through excellence in management;
  • To set role models for their retail colleagues, thus motivating and promoting the importance of quality management within the Irish retail grocery industry.

Commenting on Niall Shanaghy’s great achievement Sean Quish, Managing Director Quish’s SuperValu, stated “Niall Shanaghy has worked tirelessly in supporting the growth of retail business and his team here in Ballincollig.  His commitment to cultivating customer relations, motivating his team members and striving for quality excellence is second to none.  Over the past number of months the store has won a number of awards: Edward Dillon/SuperValu Off-Licence of the Year Award, SuperValu Supreme Quality Award and the EIQA Hygiene & Food Safety Certificate and Niall’s input proved vital to the store’s success in these awards.  I am delighted that Niall’s commitment to his role as manager has been acknowledged by an independent panel and we are very proud of him here in the store”.

The judging criteria took into account a number of key factors.  Judges looked for examples of strong leadership and a top-class team performance. Evidence of innovations implemented over the previous year that helped to grow the business was taken into consideration. Also, they looked at what the nominees did in-store to make their outlet different from those competing in the same locality.

Speaking at the awards presentations, ShelfLife Publisher John McDonald said “In an increasingly competitive market, the role of the store manager has become key to a store’s success. Whether a rurally based c-store or a vast urban multiple, a top class manager can mean the difference between a store’s success or failure. This year’s award winners are examples of the very best in Irish retail management”.
